LENNIE LEE - a short history

“I target things that are hidden. I want to confront people with their hidden assumptions in the hope that  they will be released from fear.”

Biography
Lennie Lee began as a painter. He has worked with various media including posters, prints, performance, video and installation. He used to work with discarded material in disused spaces where he became fascinated by the power of certain objects to disgust, shock, outrage. Some of his best work involves live or recorded performances on themes such as madness, incest, suicide and death. His performances incorporate large installations. They range from eating raw meat to confronting issues about sex, politics and religion. He explores areas that are taboo, confronting people with their hidden assumptions in the hope that they will be released from fear. He uses dead matter such as blood and vomit, which remind people of their own mortality. He deals with sickness, personal shame, fear, prejudice and terrorism. He touches the boundaries of morality, taste, religion, political shame, and what might be termed "Unpopular Culture". Recently he has been dealing with “contemporary popular Icons” from the edges of the art world.
